Why are Blogger and Blogspot So Popular?
By Maurice | 6 comments
6Blogger, founded in 1999, is still one of the most widely used blogging platforms out there. We’ve certainly seen its popularity here on the Black Weblog Awards. On average, well over 2/3 of our nominations are either from sites on Blogger or using Blogspot.
So why is it so popular? We did a little research. Here are the pros and cons of the service.
PROS
- It’s free
- It’s easy to set up in less than five minutes, and doesn’t require a lot of technical know-how to maintain it
- For new bloggers, it’s a great way to get your blogging sea legs to get the hang of and feel for blogging.
- The back end has an easy drag-and-drop template editing interface for blog design
- It’s easy to creating reading permissions for private blogs
- You can create group blogs of up to 100 contributors
- There’s lots of publishing integration from other tools (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Windows Live Writer)
- You can easily create an unlimited number of blogs, each with 1 GB of storage and a 250 KB size limit per picture
- Since it’s a Google product, it integrates well with other Google services, such as YouTube, Feedburner, Google Analytics (Blogger Stats), and AdSense
CONS
- Exporting your comments is a challenge
- Some users may not see sites on Blogger or Blogspot as “professional”
- Somewhat limited in terms of design unless you know HTML
- Blogger and Blogspot are blocked in several countries, including China, Iran, and Pakistan
If your blog is on Blogger or Blogspot, let us know why you chose that format. How is it working for you? Have you moved your blog from Blogger or Blogspot to another service? How easy (or hard was it)? Let us know in the comments.

I use Blogger for my blog and I'm not a fan. It's just not as intuitive as WordPress. I started using it because I didn't know any better and now I'm going to have to make the switch and I'm dreading it….I hear it's intense.
I've converted all of my sites from WordPress to Blogger about a year ago.
I used to use WP since B2…until about this time last year.
I still provide maintenance and code for wp installations but I don't see myself leaving Blogger if improvements keep coming.

I use Blogger for the Nayland House Blog. It's free to set-up and easy to maintain. I work a 9-5, so it's important that I can update the blog without too much technical hassle.
It actually couldn't be easier lol. It basically a one time one button process. Took me a few hours to migrate from Blogger to WordPress. Best day of my life haha.
