Blogging Story: Kalyn Johnson
Monday, October 18, 2010 at 10:00AM I am a fashion stylist and lifestyle blogger in New York. I started blogging a few years ago at the urging of a PR firm whose contest I'd just won (Porter Novellis Pop-Up agency, jack + bill). The folks assigned to my account were young and well versed in all things social media; I was not. They were surprised that I didn't have a blog and told me that I should start one immediately. Honestly, at that point, I didn’t really know what a blog was. I relayed this conversation to my best childhood friend and media guru, Nicole; of course she agreed with them. A few weeks later as I was going through a backlog of emails, I opened one from Nicole and in the body of the email was the blog she'd created for me. Literally, what you see today when you go to Possess Your STYLE, my blog, is what she created for me a few years ago. She knew me well enough to know what I'd want and she just did it. After that, she taught me how to create a post and suggested a couple of blogs for me to read to get an idea of how I wanted to position myself. And the rest is sort of history.
For the most part, my clients are "regular people"; they are on budgets and don't have "model perfect figures". To ensure that they get the most bang for their buck, I help them figure out what looks good on them and I teach them how shop effectively. To help my clients maximize their potential, I write two blogs – Possess Your STYLE which focuses on enhancing ones personal style and Wedding STYLE by Kalyn Johnson which I hope helps to demystify the wedding planning process. I really enjoy blogging; I'm a writer at heart and blogging allows me to tap into my inner creativity while hopefully bringing new and useful information to my readers. I am the co-author of The BAP Handbook: The Official Guide to The Black American Princess, so while not another book, I get the same kind of high weekly when readers send me emails suggesting a topic or post comments letting me know how much they enjoy the blog. The positive feedback keeps me going!
