Blogging Story: Adrianne George
Monday, May 17, 2010 at 08:30AM
This blogging story comes to us from Adrianne George of Black Women in Europe™. Adrianne is also a 2007 Black Weblog Award winner for Best International Blog (Popular and Judges' vote).
I started the Black Women in Europe™ Blog after moving from Belgium to Sweden in 2006. I had lived in Brussels for four years and despite the vibrant black community there I hadn't met many women who inspired me. Once I got to Sweden I felt so far away from home (Washington, DC) and the need to connect with other black women became acute.
So I started the blog in a quest to find out about the wonderful things ordinary and extraordinary black women were doing in Europe. This served to inspire me and it turned out, to inspire countless others. It also provided a platform for raising our profile across Europe. The blog led to a social network which has turned into a community across the continent that was needed. For example, now sisters in the former Soviet Republic are connected to sisters in Scandinavia, etc., which in turn keeps me grounded.
I know that no matter where I may end up in Europe, or on any other continent, I will be able to find black women to inspire and befriend me.
