What is the Category Popularity Matrix?
Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 02:00PM
One way that we've been able to grow the number of categories from our initial eleven to our current crop of thirty-five is by using the Category Popularity Matrix (CPM).
The CPM has been around since 2006, and it is the output of an algorithm which uses the number of nominations per category, the number of votes per category, and their relative popularity based on their CPM index for last year. When it comes time to choose categories for the next year's BWAs, the CPM makes up around 40% of the total vote for inclusion or removal. The other 60% is split evenly between public feedback/requests (30%) and from BWA staff (30%).
So as you can see, suggesting categories and actively voting in them ensures that they become permanent fixtures in the Black Weblog Awards. If you don't campaign for and vote for your favorite category, then it could go away.
That's just a little something to think about for 2011.
