Blogging Story: Blackie Collins
Monday, June 21, 2010 at 09:00AM
This blogging story comes to us from Blackie Collins.
I've been writing for years. Penned my first full novel when I was in the fifth grade, wrote for my high school and college newspapers, won a national scholastic writing award (for satire, which is irony at it's best), and recently picked up a literary agent in NYC to debut my first novel.
So yeah, I love writing.
I kissed my first boy when I was 9 years old. Just walked up and gave him my best smacker right on his lips. I got in oodles of trouble...which would, of course, lay the foundation for my dating life.
So, yeah, I love boys.
I've had major relationships, I've had one nighters (not too many-yikes) and everything in between. It seems the craziest things happen to me and my friends. I know everyone thinks their social life is the wonkiest, but somehow our stories always read like Page Six–fun and drama with tons of style. I tell stories with such flourish, choosing my words carefully, hitting punch lines with finesse, and my friends go crazy with laughter.
One day, a friend said, "Why aren't you writing a column in Cosmo or something? Your stories are incredible and you give the best advice." So I tossed together a few short, essay format posts and while writing one in particular, I thought, "This would be great in blog format." I tested the waters, told some friends whom I trusted-after all, it's anonymous-and everyone loved it, craved more. I was ready to hit publish, put the blog in the public realm, but I needed a name. One of my favorite authors is Jackie Collins. My best friend has always clowned me for reading what she refers to as trash and whenever I mention a new book she says, "Is it Blackie Collins?" It immediately popped into my head as did the catch phrase that eventually became the blogs URL.
Since Blackie hit the waves, which was just last year, it's gathered a wealth of followers (including singer Estelle & comedian David Alan Grier!). But what I love most are the therapeutic emails I get from readers declaring what I wrote on that day to be exactly what they needed to get through a break up or to feel pretty or strong in the face of the BS that relationships can be. And of course, I find myself, helping myself, reading old blogs and reminding myself that I gotta walk the same walk and talk the same talk. This blog started as my jump off, a few posts I wrote in between meetings on my day job, but now she's the love of my life. Go figure.
May your cups runneth over and may your bed be full.
