Week 3: Do's and Don'ts

We would have done this during weeks 1 and 2, but kinda forgot about it. Hey, stuff happens! -- The Mgmt.

Well, we're in our third week of this year's Black Weblog Awards, and so far, things are going great. The nominations are coming in everything is going smoothly. To that end, we wanted to supply you with a little update of some helpful do's and don'ts as you continue participating in the Awards.

DO supply a real e-mail address once you submit your ballot. If you run into an issue with your ballot, the only way we have to contact you is via e-mail. Our system automatically checks and flags ballots from fake e-mail addresses (Mailinator, Spamgourmet, etc.), and any that aren't caught are weeded out during our vote audit. We will not spam you if we have your e-mail address, and you have the option to opt into receiving our monthly e-mail newsletter. (We strongly believe in ethical e-mail marketing practices.)

DON'T leave it up to your readers to decide which category your blog should be nominated in for the awards. This should speak for itself. You know what your blog is about and it's primary focus. Does it match up with any of our categories? Great! During our vote audit, we do weed out nominations for blogs which do not apply for that particular category (e.g., a gossip blog nominated for Best Food Blog, etc.).

DO campaign like you want to win. Do we really have to explain this one? One nomination gets you in our database, but repeated nominations get you even closer to the finalists round.

DON'T view the ballot if you're not going to nominate a blog at that particular time. Why? Well, the system logs your IP address as soon as you visit the ballot, and we prevent multiple ballots coming from the same IP address to keep from flooding our database. Make sure you have taken the time to read the categories and research your picks before you submit. Aside from having them listed here, we also have them up on our Facebook page. There's still a little over a month left before nominations wrap, so pace yourself.

DO ask us questions. Every year, we get frustrated voters who e-mail us saying they ran into issues with voting from previous years. When we ask if they e-mailed us about it then, the answer is usually "no". We can't help you if you don't reach out to us for help!

DON'T sell yourself or your blog short. Each year, we have people saying they can't wait to nominate their blog for next year's Awards. Why not this year? If you are putting out quality content and have amassed an audience, there's no reason for you to wait a whole year for the chance to be recognized. Be confident and do it now!

Nominations wrap on July 25, and we're announcing the finalists on August 1. Visit http://vote.blackweblogawards.com to get the ball rolling.
