Blogging Story: Monique Jones
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 10:00AM
This blogging story comes to us from Monique Jones of Moniqueblog.
Surprisingly, I began blogging due to a suggestion from my mother. One night in late 2008, we were watching some commercial that dealt with blogging, and my mother turned to me and said, "You could do that." And I said, "Yeah, I could." So I opened a free WordPress account and Moniqueblog.net was born. Since I've always been interested in movies and movie reviews, I focused primarily on that. Since that first blog, I've moved from the WordPress-hosted site to a self-hosted site. I've still kept the same slant on movies, but I also write essays on some of my favorite characters in pop culture.
Aside from my mother's suggestion, I haven't really had anybody else influence me to start blogging. Most of my inspiration and drive comes primarily from my constant desire to do better. I'm constantly motivated by the success of other bloggers, so I'm always finding ways I can improve, either in my writing or the layout and appearance of my site. Also, inspiration comes when you're having fun doing something you love, and I love blogging, so ideas are always flowing in my head.
What blogging has brought to my life is a different outlet to express myself as well as a way to continue on the career path I've begun in college. Originally, I intended on solely becoming a comic book artist or an animator. That dream is still there, but I found out I could write fairly well during my first year of college and decided to go into journalism. Since then, I've been a features writer for my college paper, eventually moving through almost every position there was, including features editor and editor-in-chief. Through my blog, I am able to hone my writing skill through a medium that is beating out the oldest medium for news – print. I'm not only getting a jump on many journalists by being versed in the blogging world, but I'm also experimenting with how influential blogging can be by starting an online book called Polite Society. Through this, I can express my creativity much more freely.
In short, blogging has become my most viable talent and skill.
