Can A Blog Advance My Career?

Many of us would love to blog for a living and make a comfortable amount of money doing so. Unfortunately, most of us are working 9-to-5 jobs that are essential to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.

But what if your blog (or your blogging skills) could advance your career?

Think about it. Where do you work? What do you do? More importantly, are you passionate about it?

If the answer to that last question is 'yes', then you might want to consider blogging about your job or the work you do.

One thing that blogging does for a lot of people is help them find their writing voice and style. If you have a blog that you're not ashamed to show your employer, then you could be able to leverage that into blogging for your company.

Check with your supervisor(s) and see if your company has a blog (or is willing to start one), and lend your expertise. Yes, it does mean venturing outside the comfort zone of your current position, but it could pay off in the long run. (On the flipside, it could also mean increased scrutiny on you if they think you're blogging on the job. There are several stories of people being fired for blogging.)

Weigh the pros and cons of stepping forward and letting your employer know that you're a blogger and that you can offer your services to your company. Ask if your company has a blogging or social media policy. If not, see if you can contribute to it or help write it.

Now you may be thinking "but I don't have that type of knowledge to put something like that together". But you're wrong -- you have more knowledge than you think. Don't sell yourself short. If you uphold any particular policies on comments or posts on your own blog, then you have experience in this. Or, if your company does have a blog, come up with some ways to improve it and present it to them with working examples.

In short, the experience you have with your blog could help catapult you to a new level in your career. All it takes is the first step.
