This blogging story comes to us from Marcie Hill of Go Shorty: Your Chicago South Side Resource.

I started blogging in 2008 after attending the Unity Conference for Journalists and Community Media Workshop at Columbia College. Blogging was emphasized at both conferences and I felt that it was something I should be doing as a new journalist (at that time). My love of writing inspires me to blog. I can write a post in a few minutes. I have six blogs, and four of the six are updated at least once a week.

Blogging Story: Todra Payne

This blogging story comes to us from Todra Payne of Makeup Theory Workshops and The Healthy Beauty Project.

I began blogging six years ago when I read an article online that said all small businesses should blog. At the time, I didn’t even know what a blog was. After reading the article and learning about blogs, I started a beauty based blog called, Crushed Berries. It was a free Blogger account. And I did it mainly for fun.

Since that humble beginning, I’ve had two blogs that I’ve used to boost my business as a makeup artist. Just today I was interviewed by the BBC on a post I did on one of my blogs. I’ve gotten jobs, media interviews and made friends through blogging.

We’re kicking off our new Friday Five feature with Risi-Leanne Baranja of Palacinka Beauty Blog. Take it away Risi-Leanne!

1. Who’s your favorite blogger/your favorite blog?Risi-Leanne Baranja
The Fashion Bomb

2. If you could be a guest blogger on any blog, what would that blog be?
Clutch Magazine. If not them, then I would say the Young, Black and Fabulous.

3. What Black Weblog Awards category are you most excited to see the winner of?
Best Fashion or Beauty Blog

4. How did you come up with the name of your blog?
Palacinka (pal-a-CHINK-uh) is actually the word for “crepe” in Eastern Europe, but my husband (who is from there) has a nephew that uses the word as a slang term for “a pretty girl”. I thought it was so cute, that even if you didn’t know the meaning (a sweet delictable treat or pretty girl), it still sounds pretty – and it’s a very unique name for a beauty blog.

5. Who did you look up to when you first started blogging?
I looked towards bloggers in many different categories, like Tia Williams from Shake Your Beauty and Natasha of Young, Black and Fabulous, to Holly Becker of the decor8blog and the infamous Perez Hilton!

This blogging story comes to us from Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista.

Blogging for me started as a research project in 2008, while pursuing my Masters in Marketing. I knew I wanted to have a site for the fashion forward plus-size woman that spoke to my fashion aspirations. Through research, I realized that there were mounds of resources; they just were scattered all over the place. So, with small fears and a whole lot of gusto, I launched my blog. Fast forward to Friday the 13th of March 2009. I lost my job for a major high-end department store, and with this I threw myself into developing my blog. What a ride it has been!
